New Preprint! Spatchcocking is online!

Super excited to share my postdoc work from the Nerurkar Lab! How does a relatively simple tube become a complex brain? We built a 3D morphometric framework — “spatchcocking” 🐔 — to map exactly what changes during this dramatic 24-hour, ~10× volume expansion in the chick embryo. We found:

  • The brain compartmentalizes as it inflates.
  • It thickens as it expands. Inflation usually thins a shell. Not here!
  • The dorso-ventral patterns of thickness and cell division are conserved throughout.

Check out the Preprint and Code

Special thanks to Nandan Nerurkar for the mentorship and the wonderful Nerurkar Lab. Lastly, Thank you chicken embryos. Best model system!

JEXPNIMESH.COM is back!

I lost ownership of jexpnimesh couple years ago. I was sad. This domain means a lot to me because it was given to me as present by my PhD lab. I am happy to announce that I bought it back at a reasonable price from porkbun people. It was much cheaper than the fee nominalia people were charging for a year of renewal. Now, I will have this domain for the next 5 years.

Another small update: I have bought more film.

Moving back to Barcelona

It’s really happening! I’m moving back to Barcelona at the end of June. I’ve had an amazing two years in NYC, and I’m definitely going to savor every bagel and pizza until the very end. Also, now I need a postdoc in Barcelona!

I just finished the last roll of film

I just finished the last roll of film. I think it’s time to end one of my most expensive hobbies: film photography. It was fun. I really enjoyed taking photos and not knowing how they would turn out. It was exciting. When I received the photos back, they amazed me. I liked the noise in the photos, unlike my phone camera, which uses magical AI to smooth out all the noise and sharpen all the edges automatically. I appreciated the grains and microstructure of the crystals on the film. Maybe I don’t want to quit. Maybe I will buy another set of film. No! I will not. It was good while it lasted. I will keep these memories with me for a long time, along with the physical photons captured on the film negatives.

my first first author pre-print is out

Finally, after a long, long time of waiting. We managed to submit the paper, and finally the paper is also online on the bioRxiv. I am super happy that we managed to do it. Plus, I got to celebrate it with my lab, though remotely, but it was nice. I even did a paper thread on bsky. Check it out.

EMBO workshop in Barcelona was awesome

I recently enjoyed an amazing EMBO workshop on computational modeling of multicellular systems in Barcelona. I learned various techniques & gained hands-on experience. Thanks to EMBO for providing me the opportunity and funds to travel. I want to thank Alejandro Torres-Sanchez and James Sharpe for organizing the workshop.

First preprint with MOLI! Congratulations Adam!

Congratulations to Adam on the preprint! Adam’s theory and simulations perfectly explained all of my experimental results. I am very happy to see my rheology experiments with MOLI published. This is the first ever MOLI paper, published even before my own paper. Stay tuned for that one, which will be coming up soon.

Talks went well

It was a fantastic experience to give both talks, one for developmental mechanics and the other for the Indian Society of Developmental Biology. I was concerned about the duration of the talk; 25 minutes is long for a presentation but not too long for a seminar. Last year, I had only done long-form seminars, such as for my PhD defense, postdoc interviews, and invited talks. When I practiced with my current lab mates, it seemed that I was significantly over time. Advice from my boss was helpful; he suggested reducing the number of slides. I counted 22 slides and was able to present my work comfortably. I felt very lucky that the talks were scheduled in the same week. So I wasn’t nervous for too long.

It was a pleasure to present alongside such fantastic individuals. Yamini Ravichandran from Geneva gave an excellent talk about the mechanics of hydra development, and Natasha Shylo from Kansas presented on veiled chameleon development. I gained many new ideas from their talks.

The Q&A session was also very engaging. Personally, I appreciated emails from people after the talk with specific questions or ideas for collaboration.

Will be giving couple of talks in November. Very Excited!

I am going to be giving two seminars back to back in November. Both Developmental Biology ones. Super excited to show off my PhD work.

One talk will be a part of “International Developmental Mechanics Zoom Seminar Series” on 7th November.

Other talk is an inaugral seminar series “Gulmohar” on 11th November from Indian Society of Developmental Biology.

I am grateful for these opportunities and hope to make some meaningful connections with Dev-Bio community.

new minimal website launched.

Revamped the website. I am trying desparately to get this webpage under 1mb, and use no java script. Some things are working, others not. I had to compromise on zoomable images by using lightbox script. Also, math is not working. Blog is still hidden because of reasons.

jexpnimesh.com is no longer functioning

jexpnimesh.com is no longer functioning. Sadly, I was not able to renew the domain, because of extremely high renewal fees. It seems to be under control of registrar: nominalia.com for one more year, so it is going to be difficult to buy back the domain from another registrar.

started film photography

Bought a cheap reusable point and shoot camera. And starting to snap photos. I have no clue how the photos will turn out.
